Lekiji Village

The story of this community is beautiful. This is a conservation center they are building, sort of like their own little village museum.

Lekiji Village has the biggest diversity of people I have ever seen. For only a few hundreds of people, that far away from civilization, there are Kikuyu, Maasai, Borana, Somali and Meru people who all speak Kimaasai since they are the majority. They best part is they all maintain their cultures. Since most food is shared amongst neighbours, all meat is slaughtered halal in respect to the Muslim community.

The village is at the edge of the great Ewaso Ng’iro River… It’s actually where the two rivers meet to form Ewaso Ng’iro also known as Ewaso Nyiro. There are powerful cctv cameras mounted high on the corner fence to keep track of animals when they go to the river.

Lekiji is a two-hour drive from Nanyuki on marrum Road. The road borders Ol Jogi Conservancy. You’re bound to see elephants, giraffe, antelope, zebra and if you’re extremely lucky a cheetah or a lion. There’s an electric fence, don’t worry.

Lekiji Village is in the middle of a wildlife corridor literally… To get to the village you have to pass through a gate bordered by an electric fence on either side.
